The round building with the echo

The baptistery stands on the Piazza dei Miracoli, opposite the cathedral front. It was founded on 15 August 1152. Diotisalvi is named as the original architect, and Nicola and Giovanni Pisano worked on it later. The pulpit inside is by Nicola Pisano and dates from 1260.

The operator gives the baptistery a height of 54.86 m and a circumference of 107.24 m. These figures are for the baptistery, not the Leaning Tower.

The acoustics

Why the sound lasts so long under the roof.

A double dome

The roof is built as a double dome, and that is what gives the room its long reverberation. A few sung notes fill the space and fade slowly.

The demonstration

According to the operator, staff demonstrate the effect about every 30 minutes by singing notes. Do not plan around exact times such as the full and half hour, and do not count on a demonstration at every opening. Ask at the entrance, or simply wait a little inside.

What to do

Stay quiet during the demonstration, and keep your voice down in the room. You will hear the effect better without other noise.

Single baptistery ticket–Check the current price at booking

A ticket is valid for one year from the date you choose, with one entry per monument. The baptistery has one entry for each ticket, so plan your time inside before you leave. See the tickets page for the tower and for time slots.

The gallery

The view from above, with a condition.

The matroneum

The gallery above the main floor is the matroneum. You reach it by a spiral staircase. The operator warns that parts can be closed during restoration, so do not count on the gallery view until you have checked on the day.

Time and effort

The gallery is reached on a spiral staircase, so allow extra time if you travel with children or walk slowly.

Opening hours

The monuments open daily, and the last entry is generally 30 minutes before closing. In summer 2026, from 17 June to 31 August, the operator announced hours extended to 22:30. Check the current timetable before you go.

Two pulpits, two artists

A common mix-up on the square.

In the baptistery

The pulpit here is by Nicola Pisano and dates from 1260. Giovanni Pisano worked on the building later, but the pulpit belongs to Nicola.

In the cathedral

The pulpit across the square is by Giovanni Pisano, dated by the operator to 1302 to 1310. See the cathedral page for it.

How to see both

The cathedral is free with a timed pass from the ticket offices on site, or with a monument ticket. A complete ticket covers the baptistery. So with a single ticket you can compare both pulpits on the same visit.

Fitting the baptistery into your day

Small points that save time.

Ticket offices

The ticket offices normally open 30 minutes before the monuments and close 30 minutes before they end.

Bags

Small bags up to 20 × 30 × 38 cm are allowed in most monuments, and large suitcases are not. Animals are not allowed, except certified assistance dogs.

With a tower slot

Arrive 15 minutes before the tower slot. The baptistery fits in before or after it. The tower has the fixed time, so plan the baptistery around it.

Can I go up to the gallery?

How much is the baptistery ticket?

It is part of the complete ticket, listed at €11 without the tower and €27 with it in September 2026. Check the current price when you book.
