The square at a glance
The Piazza dei Miracoli, also called Piazza del Duomo, is the square in Pisa that holds the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the Camposanto. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1987 and describes four main monuments that belong together as one ensemble.
The Leaning Tower is the free-standing bell tower of the cathedral. It was never a defensive tower. Most visitors come for the tower, but the other three monuments are worth the time, and some of them cost little or nothing.
This is an independent visitor guide. It is not run by the operator of the monuments, and it does not sell tickets.

The four monuments
What each one is and where to read more.
The cathedral
Founded in 1064 and consecrated on 26 September 1118. The best-known piece inside is the pulpit by Giovanni Pisano. A visit only to the cathedral is free, but with a timed pass from the ticket offices on the square.
Pisa Cathedral guide โThe baptistery
Founded on 15 August 1152. It is known for its acoustics: staff sing a few notes to show how long the sound lasts under the double dome. The pulpit here is by Nicola Pisano, dated 1260.
Baptistery guide โThe Leaning Tower
The cathedral's bell tower, with 7 bells. The visit is timed, on foot and takes about 30 minutes. The tower ticket costs โฌ20 (2026) and has no reduced rates.
Climbing the tower โThe Camposanto
The monumental cemetery on the north side of the square, founded in 1277. Its frescoes and its cloister make it an art visit as much as a historic one. More on it further down.

The Camposanto
The Camposanto closes the north side of the square. It was founded in 1277 to bring together graves that were scattered around the cathedral. The operator describes the earth in it as soil from Palestine, a tradition rather than something science has tested.
Inside, the frescoes matter most. The Triumph of Death and the Last Judgment are attributed to Buonamico Buffalmacco. The operator lists free Camposanto entry on 1 and 2 November. Check the current timetable before you go.
The museums next door
The Sinopie Museum shows the preparatory drawings that lay under the Camposanto frescoes. They were uncovered after the fire and the removal of the frescoes, and they have been in the museum since 1979. A sinopia is a drawing, not a finished fresco. The Cathedral Museum holds art and fittings from the square and reopened in its redesigned form in October 2019.

Piazza dei Miracoli: frequently asked questions
Do I need a ticket for the Piazza dei Miracoli?
Each monument has its own entry. The tower needs a timed ticket at โฌ20 in 2026. The cathedral is free with a timed pass from the ticket offices on site, or included with a monument ticket. The baptistery, the Camposanto and the museums are part of the complete ticket at โฌ11 without the tower, as listed in September 2026.
How many monuments are on the square?
UNESCO describes four main monuments: the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the Camposanto. The Cathedral Museum and the Sinopie Museum belong to the same group of visits.
Is the Leaning Tower part of the cathedral?
It is the cathedral's bell tower, standing apart from the church. It has 7 bells and was never built as a defensive tower.
When is the Camposanto free?
The operator lists free entry on 1 and 2 November. There is no general free entry for the rest of the year, and none for the tower. Check the current timetable before you go.
What is the difference between a fresco and a sinopia?
A fresco is the finished painting on the wall. A sinopia is the preparatory drawing underneath. The Sinopie Museum shows the drawings from the Camposanto walls, which were uncovered after the war fire.
Can I take a suitcase to the square?
Large suitcases do not go into the monuments. The free cloakroom is reserved for tower visitors, so it is not a general luggage service.
