Livorno to Pisa on a port day
The cruise port is not a train station. You first get from the ship to the city, then to Livorno Centrale, then by train to Pisa Centrale, and finally to the Piazza dei Miracoli. Every leg has its own wait and its own timing, so add them one by one instead of trusting a single total.
The train between Livorno Centrale and Pisa Centrale takes about 20 minutes. The rest of the day depends on where your ship docks, how the shuttle runs and how busy the buses are. Your ship's all-aboard time is a fixed deadline. Do not equate it with the arrival of a train or your return to the port.

The legs of the trip
Each one separately, from the ship to the tower.
1. Ship to the city
The operator of the Livorno 2000 terminal describes a shuttle from the ship to the city center for the length of the ship's stay. Do not count on it being free, and do not assume it stops at the station. Ask your cruise line which shuttle applies to your ship.
2. Your berth matters
The Alto Fondale terminal sits at quays 46 and 47. Coach excursions, shuttles, taxis and car services are organized there. A walk from the port is not an option for every ship, so confirm the exit and the route with the cruise line.
3. City bus 1+ to the station
Line 1+ connects the Grande area with Livorno Centrale. The current stops toward the station include Livorno Grande, Grande 6, Repubblica 4 and the stop at the station. Which stop you use depends on where the shuttle drops you. The urban fare is โฌ1.70 for 70 minutes, โฌ2 by text message and โฌ3 on board (2026).
4. Train to Pisa Centrale
The summer and autumn timetable valid from 14 June to 12 December 2026 lists regional train 4026 leaving Livorno at 10:12 and departing from Pisa at 10:32, about 20 minutes later. That is an example, not a fixed time. Check the current timetable and any works on the Pisa to Livorno line before you go.
5. Pisa Centrale to the tower
From Pisa Centrale, city bus line 1+ runs toward the tower and the Park Pietrasantina car park. You can also plan a walk. A ticket costs โฌ1.70 for 70 minutes, and โฌ3 on board. Do not mix up the train time with the walking time.

Independent trip or organized excursion
Where the trade-off lies.
| Option | You organize | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Independent trip by shuttle, bus and train | All five legs, the tower slot and the return | Waiting at each change and the all-aboard time |
| Organized excursion | Only what the product leaves open | Which interiors, tower slot and return point are included |
| Taxi or car service | The pickup and the tower slot | The price and the agreed return time |
Prices and durations of private tours and shore excursions differ by provider. Do not use the tower entry fee as the price of a tour. Never treat any offer as a promise that you reach the ship in time. Read what the booking states about the return.
Time the visit around the tower
The slot is the fixed point of the day.
Choose the slot with buffer
The tower has a chosen time, and the operator recommends arriving 15 minutes before it. A late arrival can mean you lose the visit without a replacement. Tickets cost โฌ20 in 2026. Online sales open up to 90 days before the visit. The counters on the square sell from 15 days before.
Travel light
Handbags must also be left before the climb. The cloakroom is free and reserved for tower visitors, but it adds a few minutes. Large suitcases do not belong in the monuments.
Count the climb
The climb takes about 30 minutes, and the tower has 251 steps by the operator's count. Read more on the page about climbing the tower.
Work backwards
Start from the all-aboard time. Subtract the trip back to the port, the train, the bus legs and the waiting at each change. What is left is the time you have in Pisa.
