What a Pisa tour can and cannot cover

Pisa is easy to visit on your own. A tour helps when you want a guide for the history, a day trip with transport from Florence, or a shore excursion from the port of Livorno. The offers differ more in what they include than in the route.

Keep the tower ticket and the guide apart. The tower ticket gives you a timed entry and a short historical introduction by staff. That is not a private, German-speaking or continuous guided tour up to the top. If a tour is meant to include the tower, check that a tower slot is part of the booking.

One published offer for a Florence day trip lists regional train tickets for the round trip and about one hour of guiding, with the tower entry as an optional extra. Use it as an example of how such offers are built, not as a rule for all of them.

Five points that decide whether a tour fits your day.

Free time and return point

Groups inside the cathedral

From 6 people, explanations in the cathedral work only with a radio guide system. During Mass, guides may not give explanations, and only a limited visitor area is open. Photos and video are not allowed during Mass or ceremonies.

Dress and behave in a way that suits a place of worship. The operator gives no centimeter limits, and free loan clothing is not promised.

Shore excursions from Livorno

The port is not a railway station, and the port of Livorno describes a shuttle from the ship to the town for the length of the stay. Plan the leaving of the ship, the shuttle, the bus or taxi, the wait at the station and the trip to the square as separate parts.

No tour can promise a return to your ship in a fixed time. Keep your ship's departure time in mind. The page on getting from Livorno to Pisa has the train and bus details.

A day trip from Florence, step by step

Florence is a starting point here, not a destination of this guide. The regional train runs from Firenze Santa Maria Novella to Pisa Centrale and takes roughly 50 to 80 minutes. Then you take city bus 1+ to the tower or walk. A day trip with a guide usually has set times for the way there, the visit and the way back, so look at those times first.

If you travel on your own instead, you buy the tower ticket for a chosen slot and plan the rest freely. The Florence page compares the train and the bus, and the ticket page shows what the monuments cost.

Pisa tours: frequently asked questions

Do I need a tour to visit the Leaning Tower?

No. You can buy a tower ticket yourself and visit on your own. A tour helps if you want a guide or transport. The ticket page explains how to book.

Does a tour include the tower?

Not automatically. The tower has its own timed ticket at โ‚ฌ20 in 2026. Check that the booking includes a tower slot if you want to climb.

Is a guide with me on the climb?

The tower ticket gives you a short historical introduction by staff. It does not give you a private or continuous guide up the stairs.

Can I visit Pisa from Florence in a day?

Yes. The regional train takes roughly 50 to 80 minutes, and some day trips combine the train with a guide. Details are on the Florence page.

Can a cruise passenger see the tower and return to the ship?

It is possible to plan, but no tour can promise a fixed return time. Split the trip into separate parts and leave a buffer before the ship leaves.
